Have you even unintentionally started a collection? Or better yet, have your friends ever started that collection for you? Let me explain. My beautiful friends and family know what i do for a living and know my passions. In other words, they get me, they really get me. On occassions (holidays, special days, and everyday moments) they give me gifts that are just perfect for me. This is how my collection of wooden carved stamps came about, as gifts.
It all started with a Christmas gift from my sister-in-law Kari. She gave me these big wooden stamps. I know i squealed when i opened this package. it's quirky, unusal, and artsy. i love wood pieces. i love stamps. And now i love wooden stamps. The art that goes into each piece is just crazy good.
This butterfly/moth was the first piece i unwrapped. i spent moments taking it all in. i love the tribal look to it. it almost looks as if those wings are on fire. i love how the sides are almost complete opposites dark on the bottom, light on top & vise versa.
I had those big pieces displayed on my shelves in my studio. i love how they are functional art. Little did my friend Arleigh know i had them. One day we met for our weekly lunch and she hands me the sweetest little organza bag. More SQUEALS of delight. These are Nepalize wooden carved stamps. She saw them and thought of me.
Cue "Something Good" from Sound of Music. Seriously what did i do to deserve such gracious people in my life. I didn't know i was a wooden stamp collector until they told me so. Now i am on the hunt for more. I just love the way they look, feel, and even smell. This one above i am calling the Fig. it only sits about 1.5" high. it's so intricate and beautiful.
The bird is so unique. i love that big eye staring at me. i'm still trying to determine the type. is it an albatross? What's it's story? These are the things that pass through my mind as i see them sitting on my desk in front of me.
This floral pattern of many different shapes is just so lovely. I love that there are parts missing reminding me of its fragility. i adore the mixing of geometric shapes with the organic flowers. it is surprisingly lightweight considering its size.
